Unconscious bias significantly impacts our daily decisions and interactions, and awareness alone isn’t enough to create real change. Our workshop is designed to take you beyond recognising unconscious bias and guide you towards embracing conscious inclusion. With engaging case studies and interactive drama featuring professional actors, this workshop provides participants with practical knowledge and the confidence needed to counteract unconscious bias.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Recognise the wide-reaching effects of unconscious bias in our daily lives.
  • Understand how stereotypes, assumptions, and biases (both conscious and unconscious) shape our interactions and decisions.
  • Identify different types of bias and how they appear in everyday situations.
  • Learn how personal experiences shape worldviews and develop strategies to embrace diverse perspectives.
  • Understand the impact of micro-behaviours and how to use micro-affirmations to counteract negative behaviours.
  • Commit to promoting a consciously inclusive workplace through mindful behaviours and conversations.

Workshop Outline

ACTION – Initiating the Dialogue: After breaking the ice with a. quick activity, participants will reflect on their own experiences with bias and its effects on themselves and others. A thought-provoking, immersive scenario, performed by actors, will show how stereotypes and biases influence everyday interactions. Inspired by real-life situations, this scenario will reveal the harmful effects of assumptions and misunderstandings. This powerful performance will engage participants emotionally, prompting meaningful discussions that will continue throughout the workshop.

Understanding Bias in Decision-Making: Biases impact both our intuitive (quick) and rational (slow) decision-making processes. Using the “Candle and Matches” activity, participants will explore these two systems of thinking. We’ll discuss different types of bias, such as affinity, benevolence, and confirmation bias, and their effects.

Exploring Perspectives: It’s said that we see the world not as it is, but as we are, and by examining their “Inner Circle of Trust,” participants will understand how their perspectives are shaped by personal experiences. They’ll learn about conscientious curiosity and how to engage with diverse opinions and viewpoints. Participants will also identify their first actionable step to be added to their progressive action plans.

ACTION – The Power of Micro-Behaviours: We introduce the concept of micro-behaviours – subtle gestures and comments that significantly influence interactions. Actors will present authentic stories that highlight the impact of micro-behaviours. Participants will witness a conversation that encourages them to recognise the harm caused by seemingly minor actions. They’ll delve into the intentions and emotions of the individuals involved, leading to essential discussions on practical steps they can implement beyond the workshop.

Action Plan: The workshop concludes with participants developing personalised action plans. These plans will detail specific steps to apply the learned concepts in their professional and personal interactions, ensuring ongoing progress towards conscious inclusion.
