Workshop Outline
Understanding the Big Picture: An icebreaker activity will show how focusing on small details can obscure the larger context, illustrating how personal experiences can limit our perspective on others’ experiences. This discussion will emphasise that inclusion strategies must be tailored rather than one-size-fits-all.
Distinguishing Equality from Equity: Using visuals to bring concepts to life, participants will explore the difference between equality and equity. Practical examples will be provided, and leaders will reflect on how equity is practiced within their organisations, using these insights to set goals for their personalised action plans.
ACTION – Leadership Styles and Their Impact: Participants will delve into various leadership styles, such as transformational, servant, transactional, and inclusive leadership, and their effects on inclusion. They will identify their own leadership preferences and understand how these styles influence their interactions. A scenario will highlight how different leadership approaches can create a sense of belonging for some team members while excluding others. Participants will engage with the characters to ask questions and explore their motivations and experiences, connecting theoretical concepts to practical outcomes.
ACTION – Exploring Power Dynamics and Psychological Safety: Leaders will investigate power dynamics, privilege, and the crucial role of leaders in cultivating trust. The “Power Up/Power Down” activity will demonstrate different manifestations of power and introduce practices for empathetic leadership. A scenario will portray how power dynamics can undermine psychological safety. Participants will interact with the characters to uncover underlying motivations and emotions, collaboratively steering the conversation towards a positive outcome.
Building an Inclusive Culture: Participants will define the key components of an inclusive culture and understand its importance for organisational success. They will identify barriers to inclusion in their own contexts, such as unconscious bias and systemic inequities, and develop the skills needed to create an inclusive environment.
Empowering Inclusive Leadership: In the final part of the session, participants will perform an Inclusive Leadership Self-Audit, reflecting on their own skills, values, and biases. They will craft actionable plans to ensure ongoing development and embed inclusive leadership practices within their teams.
