Workshop Outline
A New World: The “New World Rules” activity places participants in scenarios with unfamiliar communication norms, promoting empathy by highlighting the challenges neurodivergent individuals face with typical communication practices.
Introduction to Neurodiversity: Participants will learn about neurodiversity, including conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. Through interactive discussions, they will explore key concepts and terms, gaining an understanding of different cognitive processes.
ACTION – Challenges and Strengths: The workshop delves into the experiences of neurodivergent individuals and how workplace norms can be barriers. Participants will observe a scenario where two team members discuss a neurodivergent colleague, demonstrating how workplace conversations can impact inclusion. They will use their new knowledge to address biases and misconceptions, promoting respectful and supportive discussions about neurodiversity.
ACTION – Inclusive Communication: Building on the “New World Rules” activity, participants will consider how communication styles, comfort zones, and boundaries affect workplace interactions. A scenario will illustrate the effects of poor communication, leading to misunderstandings and conflict. This emphasises the need for awareness and understanding of neurodiversity, encouraging participants to suggest more inclusive communication approaches.
Reasonable Adjustments and Support: The workshop will discuss practical accommodations for neurodivergent employees, such as flexible working hours and sensory-friendly environments. Legal frameworks and considerations, including reasonable adjustments, will be covered using case studies.
Action Planning for Inclusion: The session concludes with participants creating personal action plans to promote a neuro-inclusive environment. These plans will include specific objectives and strategies for ongoing learning and improvement.
