Attendees will emerge as empowered allies, ready to apply practical strategies and drive positive change.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Understand the power of allyship and how intentional, small actions can enhance psychological safety and drive positive change.
  • Appreciate the complexities of privilege and power dynamics, with strategies to leverage power ethically and shift the status quo.
  • Identify the factors that lead to passive bystander behaviour and the consequences of inaction.
  • Be motivated to promote safe, empathetic, and effective methods for engaging in active bystander behaviours.
  • Be equipped with practical tools and a strategic framework for allyship.

Workshop Outline

Creating Brave Spaces: We begin with an activity to explore the meaning of allyship. Participants will examine the concepts of limited, safe, and brave spaces through interactive exercises designed to build psychological safety. They’ll learn how to navigate these spaces as allies.

Understanding Privilege and Power: Participants will uncover different types of power and their manifestations. An activity makes complex discussions about privilege accessible and insightful. Participants will learn that embracing uncomfortable conversations empowers them to advocate for change and, from there, will start developing personalised action plans.

Addressing the Bystander Effect: We’ll unpack the bystander effect and how it limits psychological safety and belonging. Case-studies will help participants examine the psychological and social barriers that prevent action and develop strategies to overcome them. They’ll discuss potential responses and add an actionable objective to their personalised action plan.

Becoming an Ally in Action: Participants will identify their “Ally Superpower” through a self-assessment on behavioural preferences. They will pair up to coach each other on implementing ally behaviours in various situations. Group discussions will help identify daily practices to embody allyship.

Challenging Norms: Participants will build on their action plans by considering safe, empathetic, and effective ways to be allies in the workplace and beyond. They’ll reflect on the positive impact of even small steps and identify one personal action to challenge the status quo.

Igniting Action: The workshop’s call to action goes beyond acquiring knowledge and skills. Participants will add a third action to their personalised action plans to create and sustain psychologically safe, consciously inclusive workplaces filled with allies.
